When people hear about the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), they often think of groundbreaking research, laboratories, publications, and some of the brightest minds in the country. What they rarely see is the life beyond the labs, the moments that keep researchers motivated through long days and even longer nights.

Life at IISc is demanding. Students constantly juggle coursework, research deadlines, experiments, paper writing, conferences, meetings with supervisors, and the inevitable ups and downs. The pressure can be overwhelming at times.

But as the clock strikes six in the evening, something remarkable happens.

The laboratories slowly begin to empty, laptops are shut, lab coats are hung, and researchers make their way to one place: the IISc Main Cricket Ground, known among students as the MCG. For the next few hours, research takes a backseat, and cricket takes over.

Walking onto the MCG is an experience in itself. With a well-maintained pitch, lush outfield, and floodlights of excitement created by enthusiastic players, it feels like a professional cricket venue tucked inside one of India's premier research institutes. Alongside the MCG, students use the KV Ground and TMC Ground for practice matches and net sessions, ensuring the cricketing spirit remains alive even on days without matches.

Cricket at IISc is much more than a recreational activity. It is a vibrant community where students from different departments, laboratories, and academic programs come together with one common passion. Whether it is elegant sixes over mid-wicket, fiery bowling, breathtaking catches, every evening showcases an impressive display of talent.

Behind this thriving cricket culture is a dedicated student-run Cricket Committee. Managed entirely by enthusiastic IISc students, the committee oversees everything from scheduling matches and maintaining grounds to organizing tournaments and ensuring the smooth conduct of every event. Their efforts make cricket one of the most active student-driven activities on campus.

The excitement reaches another level during the three flagship tournaments organized every year.

The Inter-Department Cricket Championship (IDCC) is perhaps the most prestigious tournament on campus. Departments form their own teams and compete against one another in a full-fledged championship, battling for departmental pride as much as the trophy. Every match carries immense importance, and players proudly represent their departments with unmatched passion.

The second major tournament is the IISc Champions League (ICL). Unlike the departmental format, ICL allows students from any department to come together and form their own teams. This creates exciting combinations of players who may never have played together otherwise, making every season unpredictable and highly competitive.

The third event is the Test Championship, which begins with an auction. Much like professional franchise leagues, captains register and participate in a player auction where they strategically bid for batsmen, bowlers, all-rounders, and wicket-keepers. Watching researchers, who spend their days solving problems, who then turn into strategists, is fascinating. Every bid is carefully calculated, and every squad is built with a clear vision of lifting the trophy. It is strategy, teamwork, and excitement at its finest.

Even outside tournament days, the cricket culture never stops. Practice sessions at the KV and TMC grounds are a common sight, where students refine their batting techniques, work on bowling variations, improve fielding skills, and play friendly practice matches. These sessions ensure that players are always prepared for the next challenge.

What truly makes cricket at IISc special, however, is the intensity with which it is played. The competitive spirit is real. Captains spend nights discussing playing elevens, planning batting orders, analyzing opponents, and deciding bowling combinations. Players bring their best to every match, while sledging, celebrations, and on-field banter add to the excitement. Even students who are not part of the playing XI passionately support their teammates from the sidelines, turning every match into a lively event.

Yet, beyond the competition lies something even more valuable: the friendships that cricket creates.

Research often confines students to their own departments and laboratories, but cricket breaks those boundaries. It introduces students to people they might otherwise never meet. Teammates become friends, and conversations that begin on the cricket field often continue over dinner or tea. The game builds connections that extend far beyond the boundary ropes.

And of course, where there is sport, there are rivalries.

Over the years, IISc cricket has witnessed several memorable rivalries between teams, making every tournament even more exciting. These rivalries bring out the best in players, with captains planning their strategies carefully and teammates giving their all on the field. The competitive spirit and energetic celebrations create an atmosphere that makes every match feel special.

Cricket at IISc is much more than a game. It is a stress reliever after demanding research hours, a platform for leadership and teamwork, a place where lifelong friendships are formed, and a reminder that even in one of India's most prestigious research institutions, passion for sport thrives just as strongly as the pursuit of science.

Because at IISc, once the experiments are done for the day, another kind of competition begins: one played not in laboratories, but on the field.

As someone who's spent many evenings unwinding at the MCG (earlier old cricket ground) after long days in the lab, this resonated deeply. You've articulated something most of us feel but rarely say out loud, that cricket here is as much about belonging as it is about the game. Well done!

Cricket isn't just a game for us—it's an emotion. Everything about cricket at IISc has been described so perfectly, and I could relate to every bit of it.
